Crime Maps Skew Surrey Data

The crime mapping site that was released earlier this week which cost £300, 000 to develop has shown 3 streets in Surrey as having some of the worst crime levels in the UK.

10 burglaries were reported in Kingswood Close, Egham. A quiet street where no burglaries have actually been reported in the last month. The statistics shown refer to a single incident that occurred in student halls of residence that aren't located on that street!

Poplar Road, a small street in Horely has come up joint 9th for the highest level of Anti Social behaviour with 56 reports. Police stated that 95% of the reports were due the an elderly woman with a mental illness calling up to report things such as; asking for a doctor, saying they were having palpitations, or cannot find medication, or believed there was someone outside the property.

Bridge Street in Guildford had 88 reported incidents (29 violent crime, 25 antisocial behaviour and 34 "other crimes"). However the way the system is set up a single street can reflect the statistics of several smaller surrounding streets.

When asked about this police stated that there were in fact only 19 incidents on Bridge Street (12 violent crime, 5 theft and 2 drug related offences).
