Staines changes name to Staines-upon-Thames

Staines changes name to Staines-upon-Thames

The town formerly known as "Staines" has successfully voted to change their name to Staines-upon-Thames.

The change is said to boost the town's economy and help people outside the town understand its riverside links.

However there are some who criticize the name change labelling it as a "pretentious" move by Spelthorne Borough Council.

One of the councillors behind the move Colin Davis, defended it saying that the town's image had needed help for some time. Other organisations in favour of the change labelled it as "progressive".

The name was officially changed at 2pm on the 20th and was followed by a day of celebrations, including a regatta, in the town.

What do you think of the name change? Pretentious or progressive? Let us know in the comments.
