Apart from spectacular changes like Woolworths empty stores on our high streets suddenly appearing on the beginning of the year we do not realise how fast landscape of our towns and countryside changes due to economic situation.

People and businesses try to adopt to current situation and many times reinvent themselves. Many times this leads to unexpected choices and has immediate impact on our surroundings.
For us individuals the biggest concern is connected to housing and mortgage market.
So what is happening:
Mr and Mrs Smith decided to have another baby (bad economy for some reason always attracts high birth rates:-). Of course their 2 bedroom semidetached house in Guildford has no space for another baby :-(. Moving is currently not an option with offered mortgage rates, lack of properties climbing property ladder in Surrey with Mrs Smith on maternity leave could end up as complete disaster.
But do not worry Mr and Mrs Smith are clever beasts
They have good £15K savings which do not do very well with current savings rates.
There is an idea we can not move lets upgrade and 20 weeks later brand new bedroom with on-suite is build above garage. Time to extend family too :-)
<picture surrey house extension>
In Surrey in first part of 2009 alone XXXX applications for extensions and home improvements has been made this is almost XX% more than in XXX
So we know how we individuals can affect landscape changes but what about businesses?
This is even easier to spot than Surrey house extension boom
Take this lot

very reasonable decision, if you sell cars which only 1% of all population can afford and you facing ten others competitors on the market sudden move towards posh FIAT can save your business :-).
While some brands suffer and are removed from our landscape for good others are reinventing themselves. Among For Sale and To Let signs advertising commercial high street properties new quality of high street brands are emerging Wilkinson direct Woolworth competitor (but much cheaper) revamped its brand these shops looks really good now.
Aldi with its look-a-like approach to brands took over some high street shops and is doing better and better. So are we going to have in Surrey more of shiny glass or cardboard on the high street. All depends on our own decisions and reinvention.
Have you done extension to your home due to economic situation on housing market? Maybe you running your own business and you had to reinvent yourself. Please let us know how you changed surrey landscape due to economic downturn or maybe you know some good examople let us know:
